By creatively cutting a flat sheet into organic shapes, we create the seats, legs and support parts that make up the bench.

UMI is made from sustainably sourced wood: leftovers from forest thinning and dam obstructions for example, typically no more than a taxpayer’s expense. ‘Umi’ is Japanese for sea: the source of all life. As water circulates through nature, so does UMI.

This white graph represents the acceleration of the outline of the seat surface. Every curve on this bench is designed to meet automotive standards: perfectly controlled curvature, leading to a sculptural, unified feeling. As if every curve was always meant to be exactly like this.

Ace Japan specializes in logistics and packaging materials. In 2013, the company patented the eco-friendly Kyo Pallet®, made from thinned wood and other leftovers. The same raw materials are used to make UMI.
